Robert McLaws: Windows Edition

Blogging about Windows since before Vista became a bad word

Windows Futures Revealed

Long posted a fantastic slide from Steve Ballmer's PowerPoint deck for the analyst meeting. It contains names for some previously unannounced products from the Operating Systems Division. The full list is:

  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Small Business Server Code name "Cougar"
  • Windows Server Code Name "Centro"
  • Windows Vista SP1
  • Windows Server 2008 Update Release
  • Windows Server 2008 SP1

It's a very interesting slide indeed. This is obviously a high-level overview, but a there are a couple things to note. The "Fiji" update for Windows Vista Media Center is not on the list, which makes me wonder if the update will be a part of SP1 or not. Also, Windows Server 2008 "Update Release" is listed, and AFAIK it hasn't been discussed publicly before. Whether this is an updated related to Windows Server Virtualization or something else remains to be seen. Maybe Mary Jo can dig into it and get some answers.

It's nice that roadmaps are starting to be discussed. At least we know the new regime has a strategy.

Damn... it's so sad. Think about it. Ihave recently bought "Final cut studio pro 2" and the moment the package was delivered there was 6.1update redy to download. Week later there was 6.1.1 and so on. The same case was with the last Os X . It was just a couple days after 10.4.0 release that 10.4.1 was availble. Belive me I don't want to start any disscusion which sys. is better cos it has beter icons, features and so on:)it's boring and childish. I'm using Osx cos it's only platform I can run FCP and Shake but it's so sad that being also a vista (unfortunatly) user I have to wait for SP1 sooo long.M$ show some respect to your customers . DAMN IT.

  • Actually Uki, having Microsoft ship a service pack in the same year as RTM is unprecedented, at least from an OS standpoint.

Well that's the whole point ain't it? And I'm not talking about the complete SP. Some bugfix addon would be nice. I realy appreciate that Apple comes foreward to customer feedback by fixing their bugs so often. I belive that MS got enoug info bout bugs in their sys to do something about them. Well I belive it's a mater of corp policy.
