Windows Now

Thursday is now officially Delay Day. Both Apple and Microsoft took their lumps for delaying products today. Here's the lowdown, plus some other things that caught my eye today...

Apple Roundup:

• Ed Oswald, a longtime Mac enthusiast and BetaNews reporter, thinks the announcement "smells of hypocricy."
• Sean Merp remembers taking devs off of Longhorn to work on XPSP2 and says "Apple, we feel your pain."
• Mary Jo Foley says "Cupertino, start your photocopiers!"
• Personally? I think blaming it on the iPhone is a contrived excuse for delays due to very buggy builds. But what do I know? At least Apple didn't have the balls to blame it on Microsoft.

Virtualization:

• Microsoft's Mike Neil announces delays in Viridian and Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1. I'd like to know if anyone really uses virtualization on a box with 64 processors. Any why it took 6 months for another Virtual Server build to come out.

Miscellaneous:

• Microsoft is investigating a flaw in Windows DNS. Awesome. Make sure you follow the steps in the advisory to mitigate the problem. [via SANS]
• The Most Revolutionary Microsoft Technology You're Never Heard Of. Includes my new favorite phrase "Pin the Product on the Ship Vehicle." [Via Mike Hall]
• Ray Ozzie is let out of his "undisclosed location" long enough for a bathroom break and a chat with Knowledge@Wharton.
• Found this copy of Word at a Staples in Harlem. That's just how I roll. [thanks Long Zheng]
• I should have blogged about this a couple days ago when it was posted: Microsoft Acknowledges OEM BIOS Hacks. Apparently it's really easy to detect.
• Tim Springston shows us how to make our own UAC shims to cut down on UAC prompting.
• Another Vista Alt+Tab replacement. This one actually uses DWM. But don't expect another version for a while... the guy lost all of his code due to a hard drive failure. Should have been using WIndows Home Server. [via Laurent Duveau]
• Emotiv Systems has the coolest Xbox 360 peripheral ever. If you guys need a beta tester... count me in.
• Speaking of Gaming and On10.net... PlayAnywhere meets PlayTogether. This is super sweet. The beta testing thing applies here too.
• Someone has made an add-in for Office 2007 that brings back the old Menu bar. This one's for the Ribbon-challenged. [via PC World India]
• ServerDays.com gives Vista "a solid B" after a 10-week review.
