Robert McLaws: Windows Edition

Blogging about Windows since before Vista became a bad word

Java vs .NET Just Got a Lot More Interesting

Robert Scoble breaks the news that Sun has GPL'd Java. Tim Bray has the details.

Now, some would argue that this is a reactionary move (albeit a rather delayed one) since C# is already an ECMA standard, and the .NET Framework has been released under the CLI Shared Source Initiative.

But whatever side of the fence you are on, let no one say that great innovations aren't happening in the developer space at both companies.

I think MS is just phoning it in with the C# stuff. Having a specification doesn't give you code to implement the specification. And MS's CLI sample has two issues, 1. It only runs on Windows XP and 2. You cannot use it for commercial purposes.

Java has neither of these two restrictions.

Eh... You mean "let no one say that great innovations *aren't* happening"? :P

Or: "Don't let no one say that great innovation aren't NOT happening at both companies."

  • Grammar Nazi & Jason: Yeah, that's what I meant. Thanks for catching it.

Rosnya: Version 1.0 still runs on OSX or FreeBSD... plus you have Mono, which stems from the ECMA/CLI stuff and runs on everything not Windows. One would argue that the Developer Division is extremely open, and you can have changes made to .NET through interaction with the team on Microsoft Connect (http://connect.microsoft.com)

I think the big difference is that Mono is not officially encouraged or supported by Microsoft.
