Robert McLaws: Windows Edition

Blogging about Windows since before Vista became a bad word

A Different Kind of Targeted Marketing

Alright, so I've been brainstorming a couple ways to increase revenue on my site. Short of selling my soul (which is TOTALLY for sale, BTW), I don't want anything I do to be a whole lot more intrusive than it already is. The other problems I've already run into are so-called "contentual marketing" that ends up displaying obviously fraudulent "download Windows Vista" sites when it's not yet available to purchase (earning me next to no revenue in the process). So I was thinking about the fact I've been talking about how great Vista is for so long, maybe I should start pointing people towards ways to purchase it.

So I started screwing around with Affiliates, and I came up with two potential solutions that I'd like feedback on. One is a "gadget" on the site's Sidebar that would rotate through various Vista editions and link to the proper page on (a static version is on the home page now), or our own aStore, where the entire Amazon experience is contained here on the site.

Before you flame me, think about it for a second. Would you buy Windows Vista and Office 2007 from Amazon? If so, would you do it through my site if it helped me pay the bills around here? Think about it, and please leave your constructive feedback.

I was planning on buying Vista and Office on Amazon. I like to have things sent to my door with supersaver free delivery.

As long as it won't cost me any more I'd buy it via this site if it helps you.

I don't see any problem with advertising; actually it helps the quality of a site. More popular and visited is the site more companies willing to advertise on it you will be knocking at your door. Also differenciate sources of revenue help to keep a site indipendent and objective.

It was this site that first informed me about the PowerTogether contest and I won a copy of Vista before they were "sold out". Thank you very much.

Sure why not?  Is there any way to filter the amazon results to offer Vista books etc along with the skus?

  • I can add whatever products I want to the store that I've set up. I've added a couple books from people who I know are great authors. If you have any other suggestions, please post them here and I'll add them.

Yeah, pretty much as others have pointed out (espically with the notice), as long as the price remains the same for the product, I would be happy to support Microsoft, Amazon, and you all at once

I personally do not buy any software or applications through an affiliate program.  If I buy from an online site.  I much rather deal directly with the retailer.  Sorry, I know you are trying to make money, but I for one would not purchase it from your particular site.
