Robert McLaws: Windows Edition

Blogging about Windows since before Vista became a bad word

Testing Vista RC1 on a Toshiba M4? Don't.

Toshiba sucks hard core. As Dan pointed out, if you attempt to install Vista on a Toshiba Tecra M4, you'll either be greeted with a warning, or you'll crash once you get Vista installed. The problem? Vista doesn't run properly without a BIOS update. Toshiba has one, but because they're stupid, they haven't put it out to their customers yet. They haven't even informed us as to why there is a problem, and advised us on workarounds until the update is available! They're content instead with frustrating, annoying, and pissing off their customers instead! (I pointed at an Nvidia rant there because apparently the BIOS issue is one of the reasons the video card hasn't been stable)

Right now the update is only available for Microsoft employees. So if you want it, please innundate Toshiba with support calls, and tell them you deserve the BIOS update! In the meantime, I would recommend waiting until it is out before installing it on your machine.

I suppose it's good the hinge on mine broke so I am not tempted to try RC1. Do you happen to have any idea if Toshiba is going to release any vista related drivers before Vienna comes out?

Well.... I'm able to clean install Windows on my Tecra M4. The only thing that doesn't work is upgrading.

For some reason though, every once in a while, the screen gets garbled up and the system crashes. Two weeks ago the system crashed so hard, that the built-in power supply fried. Luckily, i was able to get toshiba to replace it (warranty covered it).

I'm waiting for the weekend to install Vista RC1 on my Australian Tecra M4, but I did start the upgrade setup last night from XP to see if I'd get any messages... I didn't.

On closer inspection, I'm using BIOS version 1.60; this might just make a difference. I don't know what the changelog looks like, but maybe a downgrade is a temporary fix?

I'll be back with another comment after I (try to) do the upgrade!
