Robert McLaws: Windows Edition

Blogging about Windows since before Vista became a bad word

19,500 Vista Drivers on DVD, 11,700 on Windows Update

Jim Allchin reports that Vista's gonna have a buttload of new drivers by the time it is in consumer hands. 31,200 to be exact. And as Jim points out, some driver packages actually contain the code for many devices, so that number is even higher.

I was just notified through Windows Update yesterday of new drivers for my Nvidia graphics card. Unfortunately, the secondary display system hasn't worked since Beta 2, and still doesn't work today. Hopefully they can get their crap together by RTM, but I doubt. Makes me glad I'm switching to ATI next year...

Wow, I was just thinking, "I wish I had an Nvidia." At this point in time, ATI does not have any OpenGL support for Windows Vista. I am sure it will be solved by the release date, but at this time, it is an annoyance. I can't believe through two releases ATI has still not yet released OpenGL compatible drivers.

Don't go ATI, they can't write a driver to save their lives.

I would be careful about your decision to move to ATi.  Microsoft is having all types of troubles with their newer cards and Vista. (I've never liked ATi's driver)

  • This means that the RTM contains those drivers already, right?

So I guess Vista will have no trouble talking to the cute Japanese chick in those annoying Mac ads now?

I'd like a future with no drivers. PC should be able to load info off devices, devices should have drivers preprogrammed and such, total plug and play:)

Don't do it man! Don't make change for ATi/Amd, ATi Drivers are like cow *** compared to nVidia drivers. I have nVidia card and my second display is working perfectly fine in Beta2,(Pre-,)RC1, RC2, RTM. And oh, I have nVidia FX7500. :|

A.E.R.O. Works but I prefer Basic because of it's speed. Personally I am thinking why the *** Aero wants PS2 effects and card like FX5700 (absolute minium) for transparecy and blur when OpenGL developers working with GLX and Compiz on GNU/Linux have made similar stuff work on freaking GeForce2GTS faster. OMG!
